Waterproofing aircrete sauna
-
Hello domies Martin Mccrory of Gnome Domes here
And I’m a Domegaia workshop graduate
My friend Martin Morse and I just built a beautiful 180 square foot Dome in Northern Ca
We are intending it to use as a sauna .
The dome is up and now for the waterproofing issue.
I’ve been down so many rabbit holes with this .
Does anybody have a recommendation?
I used a ferro cemment recipe for the brown coat with lots of fiber and acrylic ..plasticiser ..masonary cream cement sand . Now it’s time to consider the moisture before final coat .
What’s the best thing to use to waterproof the inside and outside?
I'm told I want it to breath and I don’t want to let water in. Very confusing -
This is a very important conversation. Thanks for bringing this to the forum.
What about coating some aircrete blocks with the stucco material you have already applied to your dome and perform some tests, just to see where you are at. Perhaps your plasticized stucco is already a water barrier?
Beyond that, I am convinced that Keim makes the best products for coating aircrete domes and any other masonary finish. I have never used their product on anything except for a small dome model so I can't speak from direct experience. However, they claim to have been selling the same product for 140 years. Check out this lighthouse painted with Keim in 1905!
Keim breathes and will not peel or crack. It does not pile up as a film on top of the stucco, it penetrates the material and chemically bonds with the cement creating a protective layer WITHIN the stucco.

@obo-martin
I would say waterproof the outside with an alastamerit or a silicone paint. The inside of you want it breathable could be lime… -
Oh man I didn’t see these reply’s in time but I hope our solution works we used a ferro cement mix plaster then we coated it with thoro-seal then added a product called omega flex then we gave it two coats of of laxtex paint . Fingers crossed . On the inside we used ferro cement plaster throseal and a stain to color it

@obo-martin Are you saying that you put steel mesh into your plaster? Can you please clarify what you mean by "ferro cement mix plaster"?
