I find that mixing the cement slurry well before adding the foam is an easily overlooked challenge. It's difficult to know if my cement is thoroughly mixed unless I put my hand down there and feel around. The mixer paddle is a good start, but I find it leaves an ungodly amount of sludge, clumps, blobs, and even chunks. I got tired of squishing, smearing, and mooshing and decided to whisk it. I took a couple feet of 3/4" sch 40 PVC pipe and twisted it into a 13/16" (30mm) hole saw. I drilled a 1/4" hole nearish the bottom and filled that hole with wire marking flags. I used pliers to curve the wires just so. I am pleased with the result.
After making an initial pass with the mixer paddle, I whisked up my slurry with this gadget and bingo was his name-o. I felt around down there and found next to nothing but smooth, silky cement batter just waiting for foam. 1_1538581652133_20180930_133432.jpg 0_1538581652132_20180930_133417.jpg !

In the video you'll see how it wobbles because I left the flags on. I recommend taking the darn things off before using the whisk.

        I'd recommend using a round container. 🙂

Zander, this is why I am a member of this forum. Bright creative inventive people come up with great ideas. I have wondered if the amount of Portland which did not get mixed up in the bottom of my drum had a major effect on my first bath failing. It was maybe 2-3 cups of Portland not mixed. I think that may well have been enough to throw the pour off.
I will be making the famous Zander whisk before mixing my next batch.
          Thanks for the clever idea.

@gemniii A definite yes to the round container concept. My rectangular tub comes complete with extra deep pockets in the corners for additional challenge.
