RE: waterproofing the dome
@Nate_D Thanks so much, your answer is very helpful and gives me a better understanding of the basics. I agree this is a very important subject and needs to be done well. Currently applying the base coats! :)

RE: waterproofing the dome
@anthonydjones Thanks for your advice. However, I wasn't able to find anything on that specific topic... would you be able to share a link?

waterproofing the dome
Hi everyone!
What are your experiences when it comes to exterior plaster and paint to make a dome waterproof? I assume just regular plaster will not be sufficient with lots of rain.I found some waterproofing elastomeric paint like Lanco Aqua proof or Siliconizer and was considering applying two coats on top of the plaster.
Any comments or suggestions on that?
Many thanks! -
RE: constant air pressure
thanks! we played around more with the compressor and it's settings. still difficult to maintain a constant output but it now works and we have good aircrete blocks. :)

constant air pressure
Hi, we've been testing making aircrete and had good results but the last batches of blocks collapsed.
After some checking it seems we have trouble getting a constant pressure from the air compressor. Whenever the compressor kicks back on, the foam density suddenly goes up significantly.
According to the specifications the compressor should be strong enough.
Another thing I noticed is that the bubbles in the poured aircrete forms are bigger now. Seems like they don't sustain and pop open.
Any tips? Thanks! -
RE: aircrete vs. ferrocement
Zander, thanks for your reply. This is very interesting to learn and no, I definitely don't need a bomb shelter :)
But... can you walk on an aircrete dome? Or install a roof structure like on Steve Areen's dome? -
aircrete vs. ferrocement
So I want to build a dome house (in a tropical climate), where sun, lots of rain, humidity, insects and earthquakes are to be considered.
I really like the aircrete idea, however some local builders pointed out to me that ferrocement
with a rebar structure would be more suitable. Offering both, better stability and flexibility of the structure, and it´s much better tested in terms of durability. Those domes can carry a lot of weight...Plus, there is always the risk that the aircrete blocks are not done the right way and you have no way to test their quality...
Any thoughts on that?
Thanks
